PAKISTAN - General
information
Pakistan (Islamic Republic of
Pakistan) is a part of Indian sub-continent geographically situated at 30
00 N, 70 00 E, liberated from British Rule and separated from India on 14
August 1947 after a long struggle of liberation and separation: to have a
separate homeland for Muslims of India being a big minority. The capital
of Pakistan was Karachi at that time which was shifted to Islamabad later
but Karachi is still the largest business and financial centre of Pakistan
generating a handsome amount of revenue for the country. Pakistan was
again divided in 2 parts in Dec 1970 and then East Pakistan ( the eastern
portion) was separated and Bangladesh was formed. Pakistan is located
at southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea, between India on the east and
Iran and Afghanistan on the west and China in the north with a total area
803,940 sq km consisting land: 778,720 sq km and water: 25,220 sq km.
Pakistan has a total: 6,774 km of land boundries, the countries being
Afghanistan 2,430 km, China 523 km, India 2,912 km, Iran 909 km, whereas
the coastline of Pakistan is 1,046 km. Pakistan has 4 provinces; North
west frontier province (NWFP), Panjab, Sind and Balochistan, Balochistan
being the largest land-wise with minimum population. Note: the
Pakistani-administered portion of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region
consists of two administrative entities: Azad Kashmir and Northern
Areas Geographically Pakistan is a versatile country controlling Khyber
Pass and Bolan Pass, traditional invasion routes between Central Asia and
the Indian Subcontinent, with a lowest point of 0 m at Indian Ocean and
highest at K-2 (Mt. Godwin-Austen) 8,611 m world’s 2nd highest peak.
Pakistan has flat Indus plain in east; mountains in north and north-west;
Balochistan plateau in west and a desert called Run of kuchh at
south-east. The climatic conditions being mostly hot, dry desert;
temperate in northwest; arctic in north. Land, extensive natural gas
reserves, limited petroleum, poor quality coal, iron ore, copper, salt,
limestone are the natural resources of Pakistan. According to the most
recent survey the population of Pakistan is 165,803,560, out of
which 0-14 years: 39% (male 33,293,428/female 31,434,314) 15-64
years: 56.9% (male 48,214,298/female 46,062,933) 65 years and over:
4.1% (male 3,256,065/female 3,542,522) The population growth rate is
2.09% with 29.74 births/1,000 population and 8.23 deaths/1,000
population. The health situation is not so good as the degree of risk
from major infectious diseases is high and bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis A
and E, typhoid fever, dengue fever, malaria, and cutaneous leishmaniasis
are high risks depending on location. Almost 1,00,000 people are living
with HIV/AIDS and more than 5,000 deaths so far. Literacy rate is also
very poor as only 48.7% people can read & write (male: 61.7%
female: 35.2%) Pakistan has a mix roadway and railway network with
total 254,410 kms roads out of which paved: 152,646 kms (including 367 kms
of expressways) and unpaved: 101,764 kms, whereas total railway lines
8,163 kms out of which broad gauge are 7,718 kms (293 kms electrified)
and narrow gauge are 445 kms. Pakistan has 43 airports out of which 21
airports have unpaved runways under 914 meters. Pakistan is the member
